Weekly update - Post 8
Just before Christmas I managed to organise my cover lines establishing which ones I would like to have across my front cover. Explaining why I want them and why I think they will attract my audience into reading my magazine. I also started to draft my magazine. I managed to complete my contents page first adding image place holders as I haven’t done my photo shoot yet. I have also changed the colour scheme of my magazine as I thought the colour I have now on my draft suits the indie/rock style as red is just too powerful for the indie side of my magazine. I also managed to pick my font styles and have them all matching on my contents page. Also making sure my page numbers link to the correct page and do not overlap this is important to me as I do not want to lose marks for silly mistakes.
Contents page draft - #2
I have now finished all my text for my contents page. I used paragrapgh style for my text this helped me to keep the same sizes, fonts etc. This helped me lots ot complete my magazine and get my magazine to the best it can be, having my fonts and text all the same show i have a consistancy in my magazine. I currently have place holder photos on my contents page these are what i'd like my images on my contents page to look like. these images are only on my contents page until I have done my photoshoot. I have made my subscribe very bright and bold to attract the attention of my audience and drag them into buying my magazine. I have also added more text into my contents page as I needed to fill the gaps in my magazine. This fills my magazine and makes my magzine look full and creative with lots going on all over the pages.

Design Sketches
These are my design sketches for my music magazine. I am able to use these sketches as a guideline to create my magazine and help me know where to place everything within my magazines. obvisously i do not have the text in my sketches as i will plan this somewhere else and then copy it into my magazine on Indesign. These sketches are purley for my images knowing where i shall place them and what headings i may have on my magazine.

Weekly update - 4
This
week i decided my magazine name would be Volume. this is a creative name that
ties in well with the music industry and fits in well with my font i have
chosen for my magazine (Broken47). I have now done some research on existing
names & mastheads to give me an idea on why i should use my name and if it
is suited enough to be on my magazine. i have just started to think about
colours and what colours would fit in well with my genre and which would catch
the audience's attention.

Masthead Deisgns
These are my masthead deisgns. i have used most of these as they have the rock/indie affect. I want my masthead to stand out and be very creative and eyecatching. I really like the second and third desgins although the third font does remind me of a cartoon magazine so i will not be using this for my magazine. the fourth font is very likeable although it reminds me of grunge music instead of rock. i have decided to go with the third one down (Broken74) as it is most sutitble to my rock/indie magazine and i think this font will stand out on my magazine as it is very bold and eyecatching. This font is also like KERRANG magazine's masthead although it is alike they are different and my magazine will have a different effect to KERRANG.

Magazine Name Ideas
I have made a spider diagram
for a bunch of magazine name ideas. i have picked 3 of my favourite magazine
names.
Radar - i like radar because
it gives the feeling that my magazine is 'alert' i feel it represents my music
theme and connotataes searching and being alert. this also shows the magazine
is 'on the radar' when comes to finding out new gossip and upcoming artists.
Volume - connects with music
by using volume it could be a volume of the radio, ipod, cd this instantly
reveals to my readers it is a music magazine and makes it very clear with a
catchy name.
Discover - i like discover
because its a quite catchy phrase also it is a metaphor for discovering new
aritsts it although this is a very good name I’m not sure it will catch on as
it could be mistaken for a geography/discovery magazine.

Survey Results
I have
found my survey results very beneficial as they have helped me identify my main
features of my music magazine and have a great inside to what my target
audience want in their music magazine and what they enjoy and like to see. It has been very successful in getting results
and helping me understand the music press more.

Key Concepts
Representation Research- My genre
for my magazine will be rock/indie music. Rock music is normally represented by
being very aggressive angry and dark. The colours of a rock magazine are
normally bold colours eg black, red. Also they have many bright but bold
colours most rock magazines contain colours like oranges and bold blues. Indie
magazines have a calm feeling to them. They normally go with the basic white,
black, and grey and then have an stand out bold colour. They never normally go
for neutral colours. They do this to make it stand out. My magazine will be a
mix of these as my magzine is a mix of rock and indie. gathering a wider audience. I shall make my magazine stand out and
be bold like a indie magazine but I also shall have an angry tone to it as it
also is rock a magazine example for this is NME and Kerrang these magazines create a great rock atmosphere and have a huge audience that manage to keep buying their magazines every week. i would like my magazine to be along the lines of them magazines as they are very successful and give a good example of a leading magazine. I choose rock/indie not just because i am into this genre of music it is because i know their is a gap in the market for a magazine like this as i am questioned many people with the same genre of music as me and we agreed it would be perfect to have another magazine like kerrang but a little bit toned down. and this is why my magazine shall be perfect for my audience and the gap in the market. i shall disturbte my magazine through festivals, on tv programmes eg E4. also having them at gigs. and getting people to do reviews or tweeting us their thoughts so they can be in our magazine and possibly gain more followers with the same opinions as you.
Audience - I think
the reason why music press remains so popular is because everyone is interested
in music whether its rock, classical or pop. People all like music and they all
want to know what’s going on with their favourite artist or band. As we have
grown so have ways of presenting information people now use the internet to
find out information where as others like to believe that its un reliable and
still want to buy music magazines. I believe the reason that it remains so
popular is the fact that everyone enjoys music. The simple reason for this is
that they are able to sit down, flick through the pages and finish within a
time limit getting all the relevant pieces of information. The more popular
magazines that are sold are the rock and heavy metal magazines instead of the
mainstream dance, pop music magazines.
Institution - The magazine NME gets its money
from its circulation 20,011 copies sold per week. Also they make most of their
money by advertising. To advertise in an NME magazine it costs £6,920 per advert in the magazine. Kerrang magazine has wider assests and get a
wider audience as they have a radio station, online website and TV channel.
This creates a much bigger audience than just having a magazine because Kerrang
is then on most technology for everyone to listen/watch/read. Kerrang and NME
manage to retain their readers by adding freebies, competitions and always
having a main big article with the biggest artists/bands out on that week.
Conventions of music magazines –
Front Cover – with music magazines on the front cover you usually
expect to have a well known artist on the front cover dragging the audience
into the magazine because they want to know more about why this famous
artist/band is on this magazine. They also use very strong and interesting
cover lines to grab the reader’s attention. The images on the front cover are
normally very eye catching maybe close up’s or a band doing something crazy.
They mostly always put the photo in front of the magazine name to show the
importance of this artist/band and to show they don’t need their magazine name
to be the biggest thing on the page as it is already very well known and makes
many people want to buy this magazine. Also mostly every music magazine has
buttons to for fill the front cover as they are normally very busy with lots
going on this makes them stand out and again attract the readers.
Contents of the magazine – Many music magazines include bundles of
interviews, photos, behind the scenes, freebies, festival information.. They do
this to make the readers think they are getting their money’s worth. This helps
sell the magazine and also helps promote artists/bands/festivals. Very known to
music magazines is having a double page spread of a known artist or band and
the article tends to be very honest and opinionated they also do this with
reviews on new songs and albums. They include many more things like tour dates,
upcoming festivals or past festival gossip. This makes readers feel involved
with the music industry and like they we’re there with the bands/artists. Music
magazines also include freebies to make the readers feel they are getting their
money’s worth.
Music Magazine Proposal
Media
Studies –Music Magazine Proposal
Genre – The genre of my
music will be indie/rock. This means I
have a bigger target audience and I will have many buyers and my magazine will
be more successful. I have picked indie/rock as this genre of magazine is very
commercially successful. I will have features in my magazine such as behind the
scenes, tour pictures, interviews and new releases. Also i would like to give
the audience a chance to connect with my magazine so I will have such things as
tweeted in, chances to win tickets, meet artists/bands etc. My magazine will
always have an up and coming artist and an article from them.
Frequency – My magazine will
be published every fortnight as it is keeping in the loop with all the latest
gossip. And as the music industry is a never ending cycle I will create an
online website to keep the readers up to date with all the latest gossip and
trends. Eg most sold new releases. My magazine will cost £3.20 and my
magazine will have up to 160 pages unlike normal magazines that only have 100
pages. This means my readers are getting more for their money and I am still
making a valuable profit.
Target Audience - The focus
of my magazine will be mixed genders aged 17-22 this is my target audience as
many females enjoy indie music and many males enjoy rock. Killing two birds in
one stone. It is also known that these ages of people are very engaged with
music as many people cannot go a day without listening to music or hearing
about their favourite artists and what they have been up to within the weeks.

Unique selling point - One
of my unique selling points will be having exclusive posters from bands/artists
each week in my magazine for free. This is known as a plug as it drags the
audience’s attention and drags them into buying them.
Magazine Audience Survey
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/YGNSZH2
I
created a magazine survey to find out information on what peoples perfect idea
of a music magazine is. i've asked how prices, aritists, shots of images,
getting their music etc. this will hopefully help me understand how to create
my music magazine as i will know what to inculde in my magazine. this will help
me create the perfect music magazine for my target audience. i shall get people
aged 16-19 to fill out my questionaire as that is my target audience for my
magaine. the main question i want to help me is how often do people want their
music magazine distribute, the answers will help me to know how often i shoulddistribute
my magazine.

Preliminary Task Designs
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEouzFXY4WuorrPkxX4tUqH54ilo_UG3ZtolvaokJ9PDeVXEXh0Y36M0OmAUaCiCeQ8gx6ORYmFOZiegdllTq6MTSC3arQeQJ6vsFDlHjFnnJNjxNpBp8L-LVsAi4BsOohQEIQ6WotW9s/s1600/Contents+page+haydon+magazine.png)
I have created my front cover and
contents page. my front cover has changed slightly from when i created my
desgins. i have re arranged the layout and the type of photos i have used. my
front cover is very bold with the main story taking up most of the page. i have
added photos on my front cover to make it intresting and stand out. the text is
black so it is bold for everyone to read. i have added the haydon logo which is
a stag. this matches well with my magazine's name. i have also faded the logo
so the main story covers it and makes it look more effective. i have added an
issue number and date to the cover incase people collect them or just want to
know what number magazine their on. My contents page is simple and effective.
Big, bold title. which drags the attention of the readers. having my articles
and stories in collums so it is easy to understand and i still can manage to
have a image on my contents page. having the page numbers big always helps for
people to understand and know exactly what page they are want to go to. i have
the text in black and red because these colours contrast eachother and stand
out. i decided to go along with a photo of the sixth form common room as in
this issue of the magazine their are many stories on results, sixth formers unifom,
their work and the sixth form food. so i think this fits in very well with the
weekly issue. although if my stories we're many about sports eg pe, sports day,
compeitions i would may of had the cover photo as a student doing PE.
Preliminary Task Designs
This
is my preliminary task scetches. my magazine is a school magazine for haydon. i
have created this for students to buy and enjoy whilst finding out all the
latest information about the school and whats going on within. my front cover
has a main story of Olivia heading to live xfactor. i also add in more
intresting photos into my front cover to drag readers attention. i have
headings like students get outstanding results, the new canteen food and the
upcoming events. this makes the readers feel involded as they are finding out
all the gossip that is happening around the school. My contents page is very
simple but has is going to have a nice layout. their is going to be a big photo
on the top of either the sixth form common room or the new canteen food. i have
choosen between these photos because they are bold and exciting to look at. i
am going to have 'contents' written below my photo in bold capitals to make it
stand out. then i am going to have 3 collums to show what contants on each
page. this helps the reader understand the magazine and what it contants so
they dont have to read the whole magazine to find one story. my colours for my
contents page are going to be very simple and bold so readers can see it and
understand it clearly.
